Guess I was looking for a place to fall

A little soft landing to call my own....

On Friday 2nd February I'll be returning to play in Gleis 1 Waldenburg. The few times I've played there I've had a lovely response from the audience and I'm really looking forward to it.

Easy to teach not so easy to learn....

On Saturday 13th of January I'll be playing my first gig of the new year in the lovely Schlosskeller in Emmendingen. As usual I try to have something new to perform as well as some older favourites. No matter how long you do this thing it's still always a wee bit nerve-wracking to play new songs, but that's all part of the process I guess. Keeps you on your toes....michael

Where do all the memories go when no-one wants them anymore....

On Saturday 16th of September I'll be playing in Restaurant Joris in Freiburg as part of the Mini Gipfel Festival.

This is a really cool idea. There are 8 locations all within walking distance of one another and each group or artist will be playing 3 sets each set starting and finishing at the same time so that punters can move around and catch sets from their favourites on the fly.

Versuch nicht mich zu finden....

Not really a new song but a new single. At practically every show I've played these past few years someone has asked me where they can listen to this song and when the opportunity came to record again it seemed like the logical choice. The recording was done at the home studio of the arranger Tobias Schwab. It was a joy to record and working with Tobias was  really lovely experience. Uncomplicated and I think, yielded a wonderful result.

The truth doesn't need to rhyme....

Gigs are sometimes like buses, you wait for ages for one to arrive and suddenly a bunch of them  arrive all at once.

The lovely month of July brings with it not just electrical storms but 3 concerts!

First up is a brand new gig in Ruefetto Freiburg under the name Unicorn Sessions.

Named after the music shop here in town I'll be playing in that lovely old cellar on Tuesday 11th.

Next up is a gig in the city of Mainz where I've never actually been.

And later on in the month a gig I've played a few times at Mehrgenerationshaus Freiburg

Be still my troubled soul I say

My first new music of the new year filmed and recorded in the beautifu surroundings

of a school for Flameco music here in Freiburg.

I wrote this using very traditional gospel chords and lyrically it's more or less about the pleasures of a quiet mind.

You can probably guess that I play this a lot!

I hit my highest when I sing...

It feels really good to stand before people again in concert, playing songs, telling stories.

This weekend I'll be playing live twice. First of all on Saturday at the lovely Burgschenke in Landeck in full view of the ruins of an old Zähringer Castle.  7 o'clock in the evening.

Then on Monday I'm playing at the Actionbühne as part of the Zelt Musik festival.

10 o'clock in the evening.

Thursday 24th March 2022

The sun came through the window and lay down on the floor...

It's been a very long time since I played live and the really lovely thing now is that when the opportunity arose to perform at the Litfass Birthday party on Monday 28th of March it was suggested that we reform The Tree Conspiracy with my good friends Beni and Friedemann. Indeed lots of other great musicians will be performing on the night but for us it'll be something a little special.

The history books won't wait...

I wrote the song Anne Boleyn after watching a documentary about her. However the song doesn't just contain historical facts but is interwoven with what I imagine could have been the real thoughts and feelings of her husband Henry, coupled with my own notions about circumstance and the nature of predestination.

Friday 25th June 2021

Every song’s a mixture of truth and fiction. White notes rubbing black notes, creating friction...

Of all of the different aspects of music the one closest to my heart is the writing. For me, writing is not simply about expression — it’s about craft and design. Attention to detail is much more important to me than originality, or even honesty. What I mean by this is that it doesn’t matter if what I’m writing about actually happened, or whether I make it up. For me, what is key is that a song must be good. And it must be sincere. As I write I am trying to create something that will move the listener through my choices of melody and wordplay, and at the same time I’m aiming to understand myself and the world around me a little better.

Cole Porter is one songwriter (of very many!) whose work I admire and try to learn from. In both his words and his music he showed an enormous range of wit and creativity but I don’t think, for instance, that he was greatly concerned if the things he was writing actually reflected his own life or not. Perhaps this was because Porter knew from the very start that he wouldn’t be singing his own songs: he wrote music for others to bring to life, and even though I perform my music myself, my greatest desire has always been to have others sing my songs.

Could that be you?
